Dinos vs. Machines

Have you ever wondered if a velociraptor could outsprint a motorcycle?

Learn more in Dinos vs Machines, as 10 dinosaurs face off against 10 machines.

About Dinos vs. Machines

In this book, you will learn about the strengths and weaknesses of each dinosaur and machine. Discover the pointy horns of the triceratops, the scorching speeds of a motorcycle, the bat-like wings of the pterodactyl, and the digging power of the bulldozer and so many more. Then, turn the page to discover what a showdown between the two giants would look like. Each battle is sure to get your heart pounding and put you on the edge of your seat.

But pay attention because you will decide the winner! Experts share their winners at the back so that you can check your answers to find out if and why you’re right.

Our Thoughts

In this epic, brightly designed children’s book Dinos vs. Machines, Team Dinosaur faces off against Team Machines. Top Team Dinosaurs include Spinosaurus, Argentinosaurus, Edmontosaurus, Stegosaurus and T.Rex, while our Top Team Machines includes tank, motorcycles, snowmobile and monster trucks.

Each battle between the dinosaur and machine has two pages dedicated to the battle stats for each of the battles and a two page spread that depicts their battle. The winner? While you can guess who will be the winner while reading the book together, the winner results can be found at the back of the book.

We loved learning about the stats – I actually learned about a few new dinosaurs (Argentinosaurus – I have never heard of this one before!) and it was neat to learn about things like when they lived, their heights and weights. The battles were appropriate and well matched together, because your first thought was like how could these two groups battle together being so different? Our favourite battle was between Ichthyosaur vs submarine, as they dove together and battled in the depths of the ocean. The illustrations were beautiful, bright and we loved the comic like design of the battles and illustrations. It really helped to bring to life the battles and the strength of both the dinosaurs and the machines. Dinos vs. Machines is a great, fun book for young children who are fans of dinosaurs and machines as they get a chance to learn about both and look at them from a new perspective. The book gives children the chance to choose the winner, and I love this interactive feature as it encourages them to use what they know and apply it to crown a winner (or to go with what their heart believes!).

The Shade Under the Mango Tree is an epistolary tale of courage, resilience, and the bonds that bring diverse people together.

About The Shade Under the Mango Tree

After two heartbreaking losses, Luna wants adventure. Something and somewhere very different from the affluent, sheltered home in California and Hawaii where she grew up. An adventure in which she can also make some difference.

Lucien, a worldly, well-traveled young architect, finds a stranger’s journal at a café. Though he has qualms and pangs of guilt about reading it, they don’t stop him. His decision changes his life forever.

Months later, they meet at a bookstore. Fascinated by his stories and adventurous spirit, Luna goes on a Peace Corps stint to a rural rice-growing village in Cambodia. There, she finds a world steeped in ancient culture and the lasting ravages of a deadly history. Will she leave this world unscathed?

My Thoughts

I fell in love with this powerful story of finding yourself, your history, forgiveness, hope and so much more.

Our two main characters, Luna and Lucien, are brought together over the loss and found of a special journal. A journal that describes a young woman’s journey dealing with family, love, loss and change. We watch as Luna’s grows from a youth to a bright young woman with fears and emotions that we can all relate to. We are witness to her vulnerability, her hopes and her dreams. How she grows with each change in her life and her courage to put herself out there and to want more. We are also witness to Lucien’s past, his fears and how he has arrived to where he is today. It is this journal that will change his life together – especially after he meets the author of the powerful words.

I fell in love with this story – I could not put it down. I loved Luna, she felt like a close friend as I read each page. Your heart hurts for her at times and at other times you are praying for her to fly and chase the dreams and the future that she deserves. I loved how the two came together at such an important time and turning point in each others lives. They give each other the hope to dream again, to reach for the stars and to have faith in love and soul mates. This is a definite must read novel!

Road to the Breaking Book Review

iRead Book Tours

Nothing survived “The Breaking” unchanged; lives and fortunes, love and hate, freedom and slavery.

About Road to the Breaking

It’s early 1860, and war hero Captain Nathaniel Chambers, commander U.S. Army Fort Davis in the west Texas wilderness, has received shocking news – his father is dead.  He must return home to Virginia and claim his inheritance before a maniacal neighbor can murder his widowed mother and seize the family plantation.

But he’s torn by a terrible dilemma – to stay in the army and turn his back on his fortune, his mother and his beloved childhood home, or become the thing he despises; a slave master!  Is there no other choice?

An epic journey across a young nation seething with debauchery, brutality, corruption, and political intrigue, unwittingly on the brink of an unimaginable disaster; the American Civil War.  Nathan Chambers has left the violent army life behind in Texas, never imaging he’s on the very Road to The Breaking.

My Thoughts

In Road to the Breaking, we are introduced to Captain Nathaniel Chambers – a stubborn man with quite the past who also struggles with his own demons and keeping them at bay.

Nathaniel struggled with an anger inside of him most of his life – when he allowed his anger to get the best of him, he could not hold it back. But he wasn’t a mean person – this was always in retaliating to others bullying or hurting him or others around him. He never appeared to get along with his Father or have much of a relationship with him (keeping in mind that this was during a time period when those relationships were not strong, instead children were taught more to fear a parent). His Mother sensed this and sent him away to boarding school and from here he never returned home to a place that he felt he does not belong. His Father had a successful family farm but this success came on the backs of slaves, something Nathaniel despises.

Near the beginning of the story, Nathaniel receives a telegram from his Mother notifying him of the death of his Father. It is followed up by two more telegrams requesting him to return home with what appears to be secret messages contained within that something is not quite right at home. Is his Mother being taken advantage of being a widow on a farm all on her own? As Nathaniel sets on his journey to return home after choosing his family over the army, we are introduced to a bit of his history through a series of flashbacks to various stages.

This is a well written story following the story of a young man during a very troubling time. The story jumps through several time periods but it did not make it hard to follow as the story flowed well. It covers a time period in American history that was marked with slavery, plantations, war and the fight for freedom and what is right. A great read from start to finish.

A Duke in Time Book Review

A Duke in Time will have you rooting for leading heroines, searching for lost dowries, and falling for swoon-worthy heroes.

About A Duke in Time

Katherine Vareck is in for the shock of her life when she learns upon her husband Meri’s accidental death that he had married two other women. Her entire business, along with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be a royal supplier, is everything she’s been working for and now could be destroyed if word leaks about the three wives.

Meri’s far more upstanding brother, Christian, Duke of Randford has no earthly clue how to be of assistance. He spent the better part of his adult years avoiding Meri and the rest of his good-for-nothing family, so to be dragged back into the fold is…problematic. Even more so is the intrepid and beautiful Katherine, whom he cannot be falling for because she’s Meri’s widow. Or can he?

With a textile business to run and a strong friendship forming with Meri’s two other wives, Katherine doesn’t have time for much else. But there’s something about the warm, but compellingly taciturn Christian that draws her to him. When an opportunity to partner in a business venture brings them even closer, they’ll have to face their pasts if they want to share each other’s hearts and futures.

My Thoughts

A Duke in Time is an excellent read from start to finish with a plot unlike any other.

Katherine, the wife of a younger brother to the Duke of Randford, was too busy running a successful business to worry about her husband that took off on her wedding night. So when she finds out about his accidental death, she is upset but not heart broken. What comes as the real surprise? He had two other wives! But who is the first wife? And who has any rights in this very tricky situation? And to top it all off, enter Christian, the Duke of Randford, who has spent his life cleaning up after his half brother and even in his passing, he is still doing the same.

I fell in love with our two main characters both who have risen from difficult pasts to try to carve a new future. Christian refuses to be like his Father and step brother, and is hesitant to love and marry. He had also just returned from war and these experiences have taught him a lot about life, the value of human life and inequalities that exist in society. He is determined to help all those who fought for their country but when they returned, they are forgotten because of their social status in society. These soldiers are offered no work, no compensation and are left to suffer with the after affects of war. Katherine had a difficult past, most of which she has spent a lifetime lying about so that she can maintain her successful business and continue to grow (also while helping women in similar situations!). You can feel the attraction between these two characters and they are so perfect for each other, the only problem? Christian’s step brother. Would it even be appropriate for Christian to fall in love with Katherine? Does this make him any better?

A Duke in Time is well written, romantic novel full of mystery and suspense. You can’t help but fall in love with the two main characters, while also hoping to learn more about our other two mysterious wives. A definite must read novel that does not disappoint!

The Teensy Weensy Virus: Book and Song for Preschoolers

Embracing the latest science, The Teensy Weensy Virus pairs simple, kid-friendly explanations with colorful illustrations, while providing additional resources for adults along with an informative song to help lighten the mood as families engage with this serious topic that has affected so many of us.

About The Teensy Weensy Virus: Book and Song for Preschoolers

COVID-19 is a big deal, but with all that adults have to worry about, it can be easy to overlook the pandemic’s impact on children. This book provides a great way for parents and caregivers to introduce and reinforce the importance of safety measures to children, while also giving kids the opportunity to ask questions and share their own feelings. Embracing the latest science, The Teensy Weensy Virus pairs simple, kid-friendly explanations with bright, colorful illustrations, while offering additional resources for adults and an informative song to help lighten the mood as families engage with this serious topic

Our Thoughts

This is a simple but powerful book about an important topic – COVID-19. COVID-19 has impacted our lives in so many ways, from small acts like going to the store, to the very important family connections we have. Many of us have lost a family member or friend, our family included. As an adult, I know how overwhelmed that I feel each day watching the news, following the new rules, trying to keep up with the restrictions, bylaws and the overwhelming emotions that come along with this. I can’t even begin to imagine how our children feel and how they may not have an outlet to express these feelings or feel unheard.

Our children have carried quite a burden during this pandemic – they have been pulled out of school, all playdates have stopped, extra curricular activities have stopped and even seeing family members have stopped. The impact this has had on children is huge, and for so many of them it is hard to put into words how they are feeling. I know our boys understand why they have to do follow these new rules, but it doesn’t make it easier to emotionally handle. All they want is to give their Grandma and Grandpa a hug, they want to go visit an Aunt and bake with them. Trying to remind them about the importance of a mask and how it protects us and those around us, can be daunting for adults and caregivers.

This book helps young children understand what is going on in the world right now, how to protect themselves and those they love and also give hope that it will get better. It is an important first step in talking with our children about how they are feeling and not just assuming that they understand and that they are okay. Children are not the best at expressing how they are feeling so using books and illustrations is a great way to get them talking. It is also a great way for parents and caregivers that are unsure of how to start this conversation and how to make it age appropriate, this takes all the guess work out of it for you.

This is an excellent book and resource for parents and children, a definite must read that is perfect for all ages. It is simple for young readers to read aloud and the illustrations are bright and keep their attention.
