In The Cadence of Gypsies, on her 18th birthday Carolina Lovel learned that she was adopted and was given a letter written by her birth mother in an unknown language.

The Cadence of Gypsies

About The Cadence of Gypsies

After years of research she travels to Italy, on a mission to find the truth about her past. Carolina is accompanied by three gift but mischievous students (the FIGS) from Wood Rose Orphanage and Academy for Young Women. In an effort to help their favourite teacher, the FIGs will have to use their special abilities to decipher the Voynich Manuscript, the most mysterious document in the world, and the one thing that is strangely similar to what Carolina had been given. Their search will take them into the mystical world of gypsy tradition and magic, more exciting and dangerous than any of them could have imagined.

My Thoughts

An intense and mysterious story of a young gifted woman who sees so much of herself in the young, talented but often misunderstood FIGs. It is with the help of these young girls, that Carolina sets out on a trip to discover her past, her story and in turn her future. Each FIG has been blessed with a special skill that is essential to uncovering Carolina’s past but it is Carolina’s love for them which helps give guide and motivate them to help her.

We have this tied into the mystical and misunderstood world of gypsies and their traditions that really takes this novel to a new level. Carolina’s Mom is a powerful yet gentle and kind woman who would do anything for her daughter. Each one of the characters in this story you feel as though you get to know them intimately and the way their lives and paths cross is amazing.

I loved the history in this novel, the look into the gypsy culture from a place of understanding and appreciation, as well as the wrong fear that many had of gypsy cultures. The story itself was very unique in the way it was told, it was just not a simple adopted young girl searching for her birth mother, instead it was layers of history and story telling of lives that brings the story to life. The Cadence of Gypsies is a truly unique and special story that you will love over and over.

Author Interview

How did you do research for your book?

The Cadence of Gypsies was a fun and interesting book to write. It involves gypsies, the Voynich Manuscript (the most mysterious manuscript in the world), and three young women – all three orphans, and each considered a genius. In order to write about gypsy customs and practices, I found old documents, out-of-print books and herbal guides used by gypsies throughout time. Since the Voynich Manuscript really does exist, I was able to get a copy in order to study it. The three young women, or F.I.G.s (Females of Intellectual Genius as they call themselves) were completely from my imagination.

Which was the hardest character to write? The easiest?

Probably the hardest character to create was Lyuba, the gypsy mother. She is a choovihni—a wisewoman—for her tribe. The easiest character was Carolina, the F.I.G.s’ teacher and mentor.

In your book you make a reference to the Voynich Manuscript – how did you come up with this idea?

I had read about the Voynich a few years ago and was fascinated by its mystery and history. I knew that one day I would have to write a book that included it.

What made you write a book about orphans?

When I attended the university in Raleigh, NC, I used to live near an orphanage. I think I must have started creating a story than about the children who lived there and the people who worked there on the campus.

Uneven Exchange Book Review

About Uneven Exchange

Like fire and ice, Alexandra Callet’s life runs hot and cold. At the age of thirty-three, Alexandra owns a stunning home and a successful interior design company. But she is in love with her business partner, Jake Taylor, and he doesn’t even seem to realize she’s a woman. She should be on top of the world, but instead she feels dragged down by the void in her heart. Hoping for answers, she decides a trip to Mexico might soothe her soul.

Jake Taylor only pretends to be a confirmed bachelor. Jake has been entranced by Alexandra’s determination and exotic beauty since the moment they met, but she has no idea how he feels. He considers confessing his love, but fears jeopardizing their friendship and business. He’s caught in a web of pretending he doesn’t care, and doesn’t see a way out of it. Alexandra is recruited for a dangerous mission. Following her trip to Mexico, her resemblance to a member of an assassin’s family leads Alexandra to be recruited by the DEA. Her training leaves her distracted, and her business begins to suffer. Jake notices her sudden change, and feels her slipping both personally and professionally beyond his reach.

Should he finally take the chance…before it’s too late? After all, he has nothing to lose. However, when Alexandra returns to Mexico for her mission, things go terribly wrong. Will she be able find the strength to fight and escape the peaceful haven that has now become her prison?

My Thoughts

Romance, suspense, action and more all in Uneven Exchange!

Alexandra is a quiet, beautiful young woman with a great career working in her own company with the man she has had a crush on for a while. She is also timid to let him know how she feels or how to even approach the topic with him. When she escapes for a mini getaway to Mexico she is spotted by the DEA, as she resembles very closely a vicious assassin’s sister. They pull her into a plot to capture this man but this proves to be more adventure then what she was counting on. She definitely rises to the occasion in this story! The timid, young woman becomes bold and fearless as she takes on this new persona. Jake can sense this change in her but is powerless to stop it. He tries to reach out to her but is left wondering if it was too little, too late.

I loved every turn of this book, by mid-way through the adventure is unbelievable and forces you to not stop reading (you can’t just leave this book at one chapter without finding out what happens next!). The ending is incredible and will you leave you craving just that little bit more of what happens next. This novel is a fantastic read for both mature young adults to adults that love adventure, suspense and action with a little twist of romance.

In The Context of Love, hat makes us step back to examine the events and people who have shaped our lives? And what happens when what we discover leads to more questions?

In The Context of Love Book Review

About In The Context of Love

Angelica Schirrick wonders how her life could have gotten so far off-track. With two children in tow, she begins a journey of self-discovery that leads her back home to Ohio. It pains her to remember the promise her future once held and the shattering revelations that derailed her life.

Can she face the failures and secrets of her past and move forward? Somehow she must learn to accept the violence of her beginning before she can be open to life, and a second chance at love.

My Thoughts

In The Context of Love, we have a powerful story of perseverance, lost loves and forgiveness. It is written as series of something similar to journal entries. She tells her story to the love that she lost in high school, the one that made her feel loved and special. Angelica starts the story with the tale of her husband in prison and having to bring her children to see him. You can feel the pain and betrayal pouring off the pages of her story. My heart broke with her as I turned each and every page.

In The Context of Love, each page is a new step in the journey, full of tension and suspense. You never really know what is coming next. When her high school love is torn from her, you feel the immense pain she goes through. You want to console her and guide her but know that nothing can save her from the pain she is going through.

I love the way Linda writes, it is like magic as you turn each page as it is woven poetically. I literally could not put this story down, I loved it that much. You just want to keep reading to find out what happens to Joe (her lost love), Angelica, her children and if she can find forgiveness, love and acceptance.

The Ethical Coach Leader Book Review

iRead Book Tours

Ethics are a growing concern in all sectors of American culture. From businesses to all levels of schooling, as well as nonprofit companies, the values that guide business and teaching criteria are under scrutiny. But, does it take a scholarly textbook to understand how to create an ethical culture? No, Dwight Johnson has delved into the problems and presents practical solutions in his easy to read book, The Ethical Coach Leader: Developing Honor and Integrity.

The Ethical Coach Leader Book ReviewAbout The Ethical Coach Leader

A fiction book that has universal application, Johnson creates an intriguing story about a college coach who finds out that his star athlete failed a steroid test, putting the coach in the cross hairs of an ethical dilemma. During a couple of restless nights of sleep, Coach is visited by five ghosts: the Ghost of Example, the Ghost of Education, the Ghost of Experience, the Ghost of E-information, and the Ghost of Environment. Each has different advice for Coach on how to resolve his ethical dilemma. With the dreams haunting his every waking moment, Coach also seeks advice from two of his former mentors. The lessons Coach learns can be applied to any industry, business, school or individual life.

The Ethical Coach Leader challenges cultural mindsets and introduces new ideas on how to apply desperately needed teachings in ethics, integrity, honor and good character. This is a must read book for anyone who has influence on others or is in a leadership role.

My Thoughts

The Ethical Coach Leader was an interesting and different style of book then I would normally read. It took the topic of ethics (which can be overwhelming and difficult at times) and used a real world problem in the form of a story to teach the readers and give us advice on how to solve ethical problems.

In this story, a coach is faced with a positive drug test on one of his best players. He is faced with a difficult decision on what to do. He relies on “visits” from each of the ghosts to help him solve his problem and develop a unique solution to this specific problem. It was very interesting to see how the story played out and what the coach focused on and ignored in making a decision.

This would be an incredibly important book for any individual to read. We all struggle with ethical decisions, whether we realize it or not. It may not be sports related as it was in this example but we all play similar roles from parenting, to self and even into our work lives. We all need to learn how to look at the whole picture and pick out the important information and how to develop the honourable solution, which is not always the easiest solution.

Hidden Chamber of Death is a compelling tale of intrigue, murder, deception and suspense.

Hidden Chamber of Death Book Review

About Hidden Chamber of Death

Hidden Chamber of Death is a compelling tale of intrigue, murder, deception and suspense that leads retired Navy SEAL and part-time private investigator Craige Ingram in search of the connection between seemingly random murders and a banking conspiracy.

Working with the local homicide investigator, who just happens to be a former Navy buddy, Craige Ingram’s attempts to protect a lonely widow and solve the case before another person dies are only thwarted by a psychotic killer whose motivation is based on pure depraved pleasure. In this first book of the Moccasin Hollow Mystery Series, the instincts and skills Ingram and his buddy acquired as Navy SEALS are tested to their limits.

My Thoughts

While this novel started off slower than I expected (I found I kept putting it down), by half way through the novel I did not want to put it down! The novel starts off with what appears to be a simple murder and then evolves into this complicated layer of murder and deceit. In between this lies the budding relationship between Craige and widow.

The buildup of the murders and the conspiracy that is tied into it, was mind-blowing and at times definitely not what I was expecting! I was constantly thrown off guard by what I thought would happen next and what really did happen – which is great! I really love that element of surprise in a novel and this one was full of it. Some of the murders were quite gruesome and really showed the inner workings of our criminal’s mind (and trust me I never saw the identity of him coming!).

A stellar book that leaves you in suspense throughout and ready for more.

Interview with Hawk MacKinney

What genre do you write and why?

The Moccasin Hollow Mystery Series

The Cairns of Sainctuarie Series – sci-fi

Historical romance

Why write in these three genres…because the tales being spun involve characters that readers identify with, be it sci-fi, mystery, thrillers. In many ways romance motivating it all. Genre doesn’t exist. It’s a literature gimmick; categories established in ancient Greek literature. romance, historical or contemporary is so ancient it’s modern; tied and tangled among all genres. It’s where my fantasies take the tales with their twists & turns, & stir sci-fi with astounding revelations tumbling at us daily. Ain’t it fun.

How long have you been writing?

Since those evenings my grandmother or mother sat on the porch swing or front stoops; spun tales of stars and wishes while we counted lightenin’ bugs and listened to great greasy steel & iron thunder of railroad freights and passenger trains whistlin’ through the valley.

What advice would you give budding writers?

Don’t give up. A fiction writer is a person who sits in a secluded room by themselves; wastes a lot of paper, and doesn’t know if outside is sunshine or moonlight. Tells nonfiction tales made to sound like fiction and changes the name of the guilty. Is that called payback or fun or what?

Your books are set in many places. Have you ever been there?

Set in South Carolina and Georgia, Colorado, other states of the lower 48, Scotland, England, Israel…vacationed/lived in almost all of them. The historical romance is primarily SC & GA; most of the settings still exist…thereabouts most know nothing of the secrets lurking so close.

Favorite dessert?

Second piece of Southron Fried Chicken, BUT a hot slice KaroNut pie (otherwise known as Pecan Pie) runs a mean mouth-waterin’ second.
