Deck the Halls Book Review

About Deck the Halls

In the last year, George’s life has drastically changed. The formerly homeless veteran now has a job he likes, a family in the residents of Darling, VT, and for the first time in years, a home. But while his present is good, he’s still haunted by the past, a past that appears shortly before Christmas when the older sister of his brother-in-arms hunts him down and finds him in Darling, working at the Ladybug Garden Center.

Amy’s looking for closure for her family after her brother’s death in the Middle East, but the serious man she finds working in Vermont doesn’t resemble the soldier she remembers from years before. This man is hardened and yet somehow fragile, too, and in her desire to find out what really happened to her brother, she learns more about George than she ever expected.

With a little Christmas magic and the whole town supporting them, can these two bruised hearts make a future together?

My Thoughts

Deck the Halls while a Christmas novel and a romance, it has some powerful moments throughout the story as it tells the story of George.

George is a veteran who suffers greatly with PTSD after he returns to America. He is haunted by his past and the death of his best friend. It forces him to turn to alcohol and he had eventually became homeless. Now living in Darling, he is given a second chance but at times he is still haunted by his past.

When Amy shows up, he is forced to deal with the past and her brother’s death. Amy can barely recognize the man in front of her. Gone is his light heartiness and in his place is a man who is hard on the outside but has this gentle core that could be broken at any time. It was interesting to note that there was some attraction between these two before George went away with the army.

As Amy helps him confront his path while giving her some closure, these two work through some very difficult moments. They both have had difficult pasts but in order to move forward, they need to confront their past, make peace with it and decide to move into the future with hope.

I loved every moment of this powerful and beautiful story. I cried, I laughed and I wanted nothing more than the best for these two. I am sure this is a story that so many individuals can relate to on some level. It is difficult to let go of our past, especially when it haunts us and we wonder if there is anything we could have done differently to change the outcome. This can lead to self hate which is just as destructive. This novel while full of raw, honest emotion gives hope and an important message of forgiveness, faith and love.

Christmas at Two Love Lane Book Review

About Christmas at Two Love Lane

From the moment he strode through the iron gate and into the offices of Two Love Lane on a crisp December day, it was obvious that Deacon Banks was something different. He wasn’t a Charleston native, not with that adorable Yankee accent. And unlike the usual client at the elegant matchmaking agency, he had no interest in finding a woman to marry―just a few no-strings dates while he was in town.

Macy Frost takes her professional services very seriously―how could she not, when she’s rumored to be a direct descendant of Cupid? Tech entrepreneur Deacon says he’s just trying to make his social-climbing aunt happy by being seen out and about with a few prominent beauties, but Macy insists she can make her client fall in love…for real. And Deacon can’t help but think she might be right. As charming as the palmetto trees and magnificent harbor may be, it’s the beautiful, breath-of-fresh-air Macy who’s become Deacon’s favorite part of the scenery. But can the hopelessly romantic Southern belle stop trying to fix him up and just let Cupid do his work on her own heart?

My Thoughts

Christmas at Two Love Lane follows the story of Macy (our legendary match maker) and the ultra sexy tech guy Deacon. These two are polar opposites in so many ways but sparks fly when these two meet!

Macy is a Southern Belle. She is in love with the concept of love and has this ultimate fairytale romance played out in her mind, which means that she has a hard time settling for anything else. She is also the town matchmaker (with a rough family history of being related to Cupid?!). She is one of the owners of the local matchmaking agency. I love her confidence, her strength and her desire to wait for the love of her life.

Deacon on the other hand seems to be running from love. To make his Aunt happy, he has agreed to go on a few staged dates (although his Aunt has no idea they are staged). He is happy being single and wants to keep it that way. He feels the strong attraction to Macy but is terrified of his feelings. We watch him struggle with his attraction throughout the novel.

Christmas at Two Love Lane is a fun, steamy novel that has a slow build but well worth it in the end. We watch our two main characters struggle to understand and deal with their attraction. Sometimes this lands them in the funniest of situations! You will find yourself laughing, shaking your head and wishing for more. I really hope there is a second installment as I would love to see what happens with this couple in the future (and all of our other amazing characters in this story).

Beyond Believing Book Review

Beyond Believing is a sweet, funny and romantic story that touches the heart, serves up delicious twists and turns, and shows the reader that there’s no such thing as “coincidence.” Author D.D Marx regards this book as her love letter to friendship.

Beyond Believing Book Review

About Beyond Believing

When Olivia gets news of her best friend Dan’s fatal car accident, her entire life is upended. Shattered with grief and struggling to find any meaning or purpose to life, she trudges along with a gaping void in her heart. Finally, when her frustration reaches its peak, Olivia decides to trust Dan’s eternal friendship. That trust allows him to break through to her from the beyond, and Dan guides Olivia through the twists and turns of her life into something new and entirely unexpected.

When Olivia exposes a gigantic internal scandal at work, her career implodes. With no job and no one to turn to, she escapes to Palm Springs for the sympathy and care of her beloved cousin, Garrett. He isn’t quite the comfort Olivia hoped for, but on that journey, meets someone who fills the void in her heart. She’s never experienced such a deep love. It heals her soul and rekindles her spirit – and just may have been the design of her dearly departed friend all along.

My Thoughts

I fell in love with this first book in the Beyond series. In this book we are introduced to Olivia and her past with her best friend Dan. I would say about the first half of the book is a look at their history and friendship and really helps to give a good insight into their history, their closeness and how his death affects her. The second half sets her story really into motion – a new career, losing her job and then moving to a new State.

Losing anyone is difficult no matter what. Losing your best friend, the one who knows so much about you, finishes your sentences and completes parts of you can be difficult to recover from. We watch Olivia struggle through his death and come to terms with a future without him there. I loved how she looks for signs that he is still with her and helping her make decisions. I know that sometimes when I see something that reminds me of someone I lost, it always seems to come at that perfect moment when I feel alone, scared and confused.

This is what that book explores – loss, hope, faith and friendship. Friendship can cross all boundaries and I truly believe the ones we have lost are still with us, looking out for us and working to protect us. This book is well written with an excellent plot line that keeps you reading long into the night. I felt close to Olivia, as though she was a good friend that you wanted to comfort and give a big hug to. This is a definite must read novel!

One Dog's Faith: How My Dog Helped Me Trust in God and Overcome Chronic Worrying

About One Dog’s Faith: How My Dog Helped Me Trust in God and Overcome Chronic Worrying

The world is a stressful place. For millions of pet owners, the unconditional love and companionship of dogs offers an escape from daily worries. In the uplifting and inspirational book, One Dog’s Faith: How my dog helped me trust in God and overcome chronic worrying, author Tom Baker explores life and faith from a dog’s perspective. By looking at the world through his dog’s eyes, Baker reveals just how much humans can learn from dogs: how to love, how to live in the moment, and how to discover the glory and grace of God.

Baker’s six-year-old spaniel mix, Mango, is a typical dog – she enjoy sticking her head out of the car window, stealing socks, playing fetch and of course butt sniffing. When he found himself experiencing chronic worry because of his television production company was facing financial doom, Baker began to withdraw from his family and was experiencing symptoms of a deep depression. He shares an intimate look at how Mango helped him understand that his chronic worry was taking a huge toll on his health and family life.

My Thoughts

My first dog came into my life at the age of fourteen. Prior to that I had been a bit scared of dogs after being chased in a park and being bitten by three German Shepards. When I was fourteen my parents decided we were ready to own a dog and we brought home a beautiful, fluffy white bichon and named her Sparky. She was truly incredible – she wanted to cuddle and love you all the time. Since then I have had a total of seven dogs in my life and each one was special in its own unique way.

Dogs have this amazing ability to sense things that we can not, they know when we are hurting, are stressed and feeling unwell. It always makes my day after a rough day when my little Yorkie comes running up to me with her tail wagging and being her silly self. When my stomach ulcers are acting up, she just knows and will curl into me on the couch, giving me the love and support that I need in that moment. Just having her there beside me is all I need in those moments of quiet.

This book touches on all of this and more. This book is told through the eyes of Mango, Baker’s dog, with end notes in each chapter by Tom. We get a whole new perspective on life all coming from Mango and his dog life. We learn about the importance of letting go, trusting God, following instead of leading, unconditional love and patience and the power of the relationship between dog and human. Mango is quite the dog! He leaves you laughing (probably even recognizing your own dog in him) and with a lot of food for thought (no pun intended and once you learn more ab out Mango you will get it!).

I truly believe that dogs are special gifts and I wouldn’t be surprised if they are a gift from God! They offer up such amazing unconditional love and forgive just as easily. They are here for us in our moments of need and despair – sometimes before we even know we need that support. I loved how this book focuses on that special relationship and how much good comes out of it. There is so much that we can learn from dogs and the way they approach their lives. This is a truly special book that all dog lovers will love and appreciate.
