Our Thoughts

Little ones love singing and hearing their parents and siblings voice. You can see the changes in their face and eyes, the way they just light up when they hear these special people in their life. Singing and reading are so important in their development and I think we do this naturally as we try to soothe our newborns with songs and movement. It is one of the most natural actions we take as care providers and parents – we sing to soothe and to show joy.

Sometimes where we struggle is having enough songs to sing! I am guilty of this and then I start to try to remember every Girl Guide and hymn I have ever heard (while only remembering likely one verse!). I love the variety of songs in this book, re-learning the proper words to each song and also being able to share some of my own memories of each song with older siblings (it even brought up conversations of whether they remember us singing these songs together when they were little). Each day we sang different songs, went back to favourites that made our little one smile, and even added in our own actions and dances to each song.

The book itself is stunning with the illustrations, we found ourselves running our hands over each page. The design is so thoughtful and intentional with big impact. This really helped to engage our little one and family in reading and singing time.

This is a wonderful book that would make a great addition to baby shower and newborn gifts. Parents will enjoy each moment spent singing to their little one with the aid of this gorgeous book!

The Young Runner’s Guide to Nutrition

The Young Runner’s Guide to Nutrition empowers young athletes to take control of their training by teaching them one of the areas not focused on enough – nutrition.

About The Young Runner’s Guide to Nutrition

Author, lifelong runner, and certified running and nutrition coach Michele Pettinger grew up running under the tutelage of her father, the high school cross country and track coach. With The Young Runner’s Guide to Nutrition, she plans to carry on the legacy of reaching youth runners and the communities that support them through nutrition education and practical, easy-to-implement protocols.

With this practical guide, young runners will learn the fundamentals of sports nutrition, explaining why they need specific nutrients and what foods contain them. These young athletes will also discover more about:

  • Navigating adolescence and the unique nutritional needs of the young runner, like macronutrients, micronutrients, and hydration
  • Nutritional challenges and health risks such as the female and male athlete triads, disordered eating, RED-S, and other areas of concern
  • Strategic fueling and optimizing performance and recovery through nutrition planning and nutrient timing
  • Empowering change by integrating nutrition education into running programs, including how to foster positive body image and daily practical tools for upholding nutrition protocols

Change in sports nutrition for young runners needs to start with the entire community that supports them — their coaches, trainers, and families. That’s why The Young Runner’s Guide to Nutrition also includes resources for coaches on how to integrate nutrition education into their training programs and content for parents on how to foster good nutrition at home that will support the needs of their young runner through meal planning, cooking, and conversation.

Our Thoughts

We all know how important nutrition is, not only in our everyday lives but especially as athletes and for those who of us who are actively strength training for health and conditioning. It is hard not to avoid the plenty of recommendations that bombard us both as parents, and as athletes every day on social media. While we know and acknowledge the importance of nutrition, this is also an area that is often overlooked and where athletes and their parents are not adequately equipped with the knowledge to support their athlete.

Both of my boys have played competitive soccer, our youngest is now playing high performance soccer for an MLS academy. His training schedule sees him on the pitch five days a week for training plus a sixth for games. He loves this – it has been his dream since watching his older brother on the pitch. This also requires a lot of travel daily and it feels like we are on the run a lot. The academy does an incredible job taking care of their physical and mental well being while stressing the importance of nutrition at home. As a parent, even with my background in Kinesiology, I feel unprepared and a bit scared on what to provide, when to provide it and portion sizes. Not to mention how do I add variety (who wants to eat the same thing every day?) and can we have it on the go.

I really appreciated Michele’s approach to this book, I read the book twice before sharing with my son. While I do feel that athletes need to have the discipline and ownership of their health and sport, nutrition is one area that both parent and athlete need the education and skill set to prepare for training and competition (it is a whole family approach). The approach and knowledge shared while geared to running, can be applied to athletes in all sports.

Michele’s approach in this book is as follows:

  • understanding the adolescence body as it undergoes changes
  • how can we optimize what we eat for both performance and recovery
  • how can we strategically eat and hydrate (the when and how) to perform optimally
  • how to navigate typical nutrition challenges that all adolescences will encounter but the specific impact that they have on athletes
  • the family support unit on nutrition and athletes
  • recipes to help you put it all together

The sections are covered in a straightforward, easy to read manner. They are specific and to the point, which in this age group is important. Each section was easy to understand and relatable to athletes (both female and male). Michele also provides examples in each section to help athletes and their families apply the knowledge. Many of the sections were relatable to both our athlete and our family.

One of the biggest struggles we have had is that early morning meal/snack or pre-match snack, and when I came to this section I felt grateful that we weren’t alone. Even the concerns that were listed (I feel sick, I am not hungry, I will have to use the bathroom, etc..) matched the concerns that are brought up in our own home. It felt so good to know we aren’t alone, our child isn’t alone but then have specific actions and resources to go to in order to address these concerns (versus Mom and Dad just saying you will not have the energy to play if you don’t eat!).

Athletes are bombarded with nutrition every day (here is the food guide, you need to eat right to fuel your body, eat more protein to gain mass, you need to eat this to succeed, etc.). It is overwhelming as a parent, so how can we expect young athletes to not only take this information in but apply it is as well without the proper resources. The Young Runner’s Guide to Nutrition equips athletes and their families not only with the education but the resources to incorporate a strategic, nutritional approach to optimize performance in training and competition. This is a must have for all young athletes!

Is That My Hat?

Is That My Hat is a fun, engaging read for parents and young children.

About Is That My Hat?

Mole is struggling to find the perfect hat. After trying on big, spooky, and silly hats, Mole ends up creating the perfect hat for himself. Full of creativity and bright illustrations, this picture book is a charming and engaging read.

Our Thoughts

I love to read and I especially love reading with my children. These moments are incredibly special and important to hold on to. I really try hard to ensure that the books we are reading are geared towards their age, but also stimulating, engaging and most importantly fun.

With a new addition to our family we have been on the hunt to add to our collection of story time and bed time books. Is That My Hat? was a huge hit in our household. It had everything that makes a child’s book fun and engaging. The sentences had a great rhythm that allowed you to change the tone and pitch of your voice to really help draw a child into the story. It felt natural to speak the words to my child and change my facial expressions to bring the story to life. While my little one is quite a bit younger, a three to four year old would have a great time with prompting questions (what items would you choose for a hat, what makes that special, etc..) to help bring this story to life.

The illustrations are simple, with clean lines and bright colours that help to deliver the storyline without being distracting. I prefer these types of illustrations in children’s stories as I find this helps encourage connection to the story itself versus being caught up trying to follow distracting images page to page.

Is That My Hat? is a wonderful story for young children and will be a welcome addition to your home library.

To Win A Prince

In To Win A Prince, though they come from vastly different worlds, Iris and Ekon are both determined to reach their goals, and the only way to do that is to work together–if they can just keep their hearts from getting in the way.

to win a prince

About To Win A Prince

As a fashion aficionado and best friend of the queen of the African island country Ọlọrọ Ilé, Iris Blakely dreams of using her talent to start a sustainable clothing line to help citizens in impoverished areas and honor the country’s resources. But when she discovers that Ekon Diallo–the man who betrayed her best friend–will be her business consultant, the battle between her desires and reality begins.

Ekon Diallo has lost everything: his princely title, his material possessions, his friends, and the respect of his fellow Ọlọrans. To pay for his actions against Ọlọrọ Ilé, he’s forced to assist the charismatic Iris Blakely–but he can’t allow his heart to distract him from regaining his status.

My Thoughts

Book two by this author does not disappoint! I love the way Toni writes – it draws you into the story and connects you with the main characters in an intimate way. This novel delivers that and more.

In this novel, we are introduced to the Queen’s best friend Iris. While we meet her in the first novel, in this one we take a deep dive into her life, her passions and feelings. She is drawn to the people and wants to help support the less fortunate of this beautiful country she has come to. She is also strongly attracted to the man who tried to ruin her best friend and who is supposed to be completing community service with her business! Talk about conflicting priorities – Iris is torn between seeing the good in someone, forgiveness and her own beliefs. Is she being used for her good heart? Will she be hurt? What path should she follow?

At the heart of her dilemma is Ekon – by far one of my favourite characters in this novel. I loved watching him mature and grow chapter by chapter. While from the outside, many would see the privileged and rich life he had but this came with its own consequences and damages to his emotional and mental health that we cannot see. He struggles with everything that he has been taught as a child, with his love and loyalty to family (despite how they treat him) and how and who he wants to be.

While a story with great lessons and growth and development, it is told in a fun and engaging manner that keeps you turning each page, wanting to know more. I could not put this one down – I cannot wait to read more from this author.

Beneath the Bending Skies

New from New York Times bestselling author Jane Kirkpatrick, Beneath the Bending Skies is a sweeping story of hospitality, destiny, and the bonds of family.

About Beneath the Bending Skies

Mollie Sheehan has spent much of her life striving to be a dutiful daughter and honor her father’s wishes, even when doing so has led to one heartbreak after another. After all, what options does she truly have in 1860s Montana? But providing for her stepfamily during her father’s long absences doesn’t keep her from wishing for more.

When romance blooms between her and Peter Ronan, Mollie finally allows herself to hope for a brighter future–until her father voices his disapproval of the match and moves her to California to ensure the breakup. Still, time and providence are at work, even when circumstances are at their bleakest. Mollie may soon find that someone far greater than her father is in control of the course of her life–and that even the command to “honor thy father” has its limits.

My Thoughts

I fell in love with this story of Mollie – who is the kindest, strongest and devoted young woman during a time that is not the kindest to women in general. She is constantly pitted between her life dreams and goals, and her Father’s.

Mollie’s Mother passes away at a young age and as we come to learn, she was the love of her Father’s life. This plays into the control and the behaviours of her Father throughout the novel. At a young age by today’s standards, she falls in love with a man slightly older than her but a well respected man. Her Father denies the two the opportunity for love and goes to such extremes as moving a great distance to keep the two apart.

Mollie grows in her confidence and wisdom apart from her love but her heart yearns for more. She yearns for love and children and she faces a tough decision – does she follow her heart and teachings from God, or continue to allow her Father to dictate her life.

This was a beautiful story from start to finish. My heart broke for Mollie many times throughout the story – she is a beautiful soul who has sacrificed so much for her family but her Father refuses to really ‘see’ her and let her live. You become proud of her resilience and strength – rooting for her but hoping that she finds peace in her heart and with her family. Mollie’s personal struggles takes place in the context of her move to Montana as the wife of an Agent for the Native American tribes. In this, we are exposed to the treatment of the Indigenous people and the struggles that they faced during this time (a very high level look at their struggles).

This is a definite must read novel this winter season and would make a great gift this holiday season.
