Hidden in the Stars by Robin Caroll #review

A quilt holds deadly secrets that has led to blackmail and ultimately death in Hidden in the Stars.

About Hidden in the Stars

Following an attack that killed her mother and stole her ability to speak and use her hands, 21 year old Sophia Montgomery has no choice but to accept her estranged Grandmother’s offer to their family home – a person she did not know even existed. Detective Julian Frazier is working hard on her case but Sophia’s inability to speak thwarts her eyewitness evidence. The fact that Julian is undeniably attracted to Sophia doesn’t help either, so Julian hides his feelings as concern for a trauma victim and focuses on finding her mother’s killer.

Little do they know the clues to solving the case may be right in front of them displayed through Sophia’s mother’s “special” quilt design. Who will realize the secret Sophia has been unknowingly displayed in plain sight. When the truth comes to light will Sophia find her voice again? Or will the murderer – still at large – silencer her forever?

My Thoughts

Wow – an incredibly suspenseful novel. Sophia is at the same time a fragile victim of a brutal crime but strong beyond words as she struggles to remember what happened and any evidence the police might have overlooked. Hidden in the Stars jumps right in at the brutal attack on Sophia and her Mother and slowly the attack is unravelled but keeps you guessing throughout the entire novel. Her mother’s Russian heritage that she guarded secretly is revealed to her as her Grandmother who she never knew existed enters into her life.

The relationship between Julian and Sophia develops slowly and at first you wonder if maybe the attraction is because Sophia looks at him as her rescuer and protector. It is not until near the end that you realize their relationship is deeper than this as they have both suffered terrible losses. They both feel alone and help each other through this emptiness.
