Dear Mr. Knightley #review #giveaway

Dear Mr. Knightley is the debut novel from Katherine Reay. Dear Mr. Knightley follows the story of Samantha Moore, a young woman who has a hard and difficult life. She grew up in an abusive home and was orphaned at a young age. She was sent from one foster home to another. She hid her pain in her love of reading, especially the works of Austen, Dickens and the Bronte sisters. She developed such a close connection to these books that she begins to relate herself and those around her to those characters. She is given an incredible opportunity to apply to a journalist program at a prestige school where she is accepted. Her benefactor, Mr. Knightley, would pay for the the schooling as long as she writes frequent letters to him. The story takes a twist when she meets Alex Powell and falls in love.
Dear Mr. Knightley is written in the format of letters – almost as if it is Samantha’s personal diary as we follow her journey of self discovery. We are able to witness her most personal feelings and feel each moment with her. I felt like I was part of the novel and at times I just wanted to be able to reach out to her and hug her. Her story is a story that many of us can relate to or have met someone in these same shoes. We have all dealt with betrayal of trust in some form and it has left scars on our hearts. Learning to trust and allowing someone into our lives is so difficult especially when we have been hurt before. Throughout the novel you wanted to just reach out to Samantha and guide her, to tell her to trust her heart and let people in. This was the first novel I have read in over a year that has actually moved me to the point of tears. It was such an emotional story of pain, love, trust and hope.

Hemp Heart Balls

My co-worker recently introduced me to the world of hemp hearts and chia seeds. She has been on a clean eating diet and has done so well with weight loss and a healthy living lifestyle. I am slowly following her wisdom and getting on board with a cleaner way of eating.
She created a super tasty “protein” ball recipe which I altered to suit my own personal likes. It is an excellent afternoon pick me up or even an after work snack (I am always starving when I first get home from work but I am still in the process of cooking so the only thing to munch on is unhealthy snacks in the house!). The recipe is so simple and involves no baking.

You can add in chia seeds or flax seed if you want to or even substitute dried cranberries for the chocolate chips.
Ingredients:
– 1/2 cup of oats
– 1/2 cup of hemp hearts
– 1 tbsp of honey
-1/4 cup of natural peanut butter
– chocolate chips (enough for two to three pieces a ball)
Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients into a ball. Mix together until mixture is well mixed and is able to stick together.

2. Form the mixture into balls. Place in fridge and enjoy!

Lest We Forget

I found this beautiful poem written by John Bailey that I would love to share with you as we remember those who fought and those who still fight for our freedoms.
Taking A Stand

I ask you to stand with me
For both the injured and the lost
I ask you to keep count with me
Of all the wars and what they cost
I ask you to be silent with me
Quietly grateful for our lot
As I expect you’re as thankful as me
For the health and life we’ve got
I ask that you wish them well with me
All those still risking their all
And I ask that you remember with me
The names of those that fall
I expect that you are proud like me
Of this great nation of ours too
So enjoying all its freedoms like me
Support those upholding them for you
I hope that you are hopeful like me
That we’ll soon bring an end to wars
So you’ll have to stand no more with me
And mourning families no different from yours
‘Til then be thankful you can stand with me
Thinking of those who now cannot
For standing here today with me
At least we show they’re not forgot
