Spring into Fun with Raincoast Books #PlayTestShare

Raincoast Books

Spring is right around the corner and we are very excited for a change in the weather. Spring with all of its beauty and new beginnings also brings with it rainy days that will be spent inside. As parents we know how quickly our children can become bored inside when they know the weather is warmer but they are stuck inside due to rain and how frustrating this can be for them (and us).

Raincoast Books has put together nine of their top spring games and activities as part of their #PlayTestShare Spring Fun promotion to keep your child engaged and happy during the rainy days of spring. We put to test two of these activities, Crocodile and Friends Animal Memory Game and After Dinner Amusements: Which Would You Choose.

The hardest part? Which one we loved more!

Crocodile and Friends Animal Memory Game

Fossil, a good-natured crocodile who just wants some peace and quiet, quickly won the hearts of children everywhere in the delightful picture book The Quiet Crocodile. Now Fossil and his friends are back, ready to play, in this fun memory game. The fifty-two cards feature twenty-six charming illustrations of Fossil and his many friends, nested in a handsome keepsake box. An added bonus is a folded poster showing all of the animal friends together, from Fippo the Hippo and Ryan the Lion to Pat the Cat.

Spring into Fun with Raincoast Books #PlayTestShare

This is beautifully illustrated game of memory. The cards are thick which is perfect for little hands learning the rules of the game. I fell in love with the beautiful illustrations, they are so precious! Each animal definitely has a character of their own, our youngest loved the lion while I fell in love with the zebra. There are twenty-six pairs of card which was just enough to keep the game competitive but not too hard for our youngest.

You can purchase a copy of this activity on Raincoast Books.

After Dinner Amusements: Which Would You Choose

With 50 hilarious and thought-provoking questions asking players to choose between two equally good, unpleasant, or absurd scenarios, this revealing party game leads to interesting conversations and good fun for all ages!

Spring into Fun with Raincoast Books #PlayTestShare

We LOVED these fifty questions! We brought this on a car trip to Toronto and had so much fun with the answers. Some of them were so tough to answer (how can you choose between spiders and snakes!). They were questions that were appropriate for all ages in our family (from six to thirty-six) and I actually loved to hear our boy’s answers – they put so much thought into their answers and it was great to see how creative they were. They actually started to come up with some of their own creative questions. As I type this, our youngest is currently asking if I would rather hug a hippo or a cheetah – he has really gotten into this game!

You can purchase this activity on Raincoast Books.

The other activities in the #PlayTestShare spring edition are:

It’s a goofy gift, a boredom-busting game, and a great way to develop matching and fine motor skills, all in one appealing and colorful package.

The Mystery Mansion

Reviving the Victorian craze for ‘myrioramas’, the 20 picture cards can be placed in any order to create seamless scenes. Almost infinite combinations of cards provide endless storyscaping possibilities. Find sinister suits of armour and the aftermaths of strange accidents, butlers with a grudge and glamorous couples where revenge is never far from the surface. The world’s oceans are home to many different species and plants, from tiny organisms like plankton to the world’s largest animal, the blue whale. Deep down in the seas’ depth, you will even find some monstrous-looking creatures that seem to have come straight out of a fairy tale. Vivid digital illustrations help introduce a variety of aquatic creatures in this addition to the My Nature Sticker Activity Book series.

This modern twist on alphabet blocks offers a new way to see the beauty of letterforms. Adults and children alike can build letters and words out of the 39 colorful wooden pieces, spelling out names or creating personalized messages for display.

Bob the Artist: Dominoes

Bob the Artist, first introduced in the quirky Bob the Artist picture book, loves to paint with brightly colored splashes, but he has got into a bit of a mess. Help Bob clear up his paints by matching the colors and numbers in this fun game of dominoes. A wonderful concept game for toddlers!

Walk with Me Review

iRead Book Tours

Everyone sees the world differently and this is my collection of the quirkyness that I call life – Walk with Me.

Walk with Me Review

About Walk with Me

Whenever I’m asked “which is the best camera?” I pretty much respond: “the one you have on you.” In fact, most of the images in this book were taken with my cell phone simply because I always have it with me.

This is not only a book about street photography but a visual diary, or collection of quirky, unusual and sometimes just plain weird photos I’ve taken over the course of the last decade.

As a street photographer, I need to be an assiduous walker. My sneakers often take me to little known, hidden corners, seaweed strewn (and sometimes stinky) beaches and really cool back alleys of my rather small island city of Victoria, BC.

I’ve also included images of curiosities I’ve seen throughout my travels.

Everyone sees the world differently and this is my collection of the quirkyness that I call life.

My Thoughts

I love photography – with a simple photo so many feelings can be expressed. We can guess at the emotion, the weather, the smells and the taste. A great photo draws you in and leaves you imaging exactly what is behind the image.

Debra is an incredible photographer – her images express so much meaning and thought. This book shows photos of the simple every day to the beauty of nature and architecture. You wonder at the meaning behind the expressions of the individuals on the bus and street – where are they going, what are they feeling? The images of the streets – you can almost hear the noise, smell the smells and feel the vibration of energy. Her images come alive in this book.

Walk with Me is a beautiful display of Debra’s travels and the incredible experiences she has had. She captures raw and real moments, moments of laughter, hope and sometimes I feel of sadness. It reminded me to always stop and take in the beauty of each moment, as there is beauty in everything.

You can purchase a copy of this book on Amazon, iTunes and Blurb.

About the Author

“My dad always carried a camera under the seat of his car and was constantly taking pictures. I think that his example, together with pouring over National Geographic magazines as a child fuelled my curiosity for the world around me.

I am a documentary photographer and street photography is my passion. Some of my images have been chosen by National Geographic as editor’s favourites and are on display in the National Geographic museum in Washington, DC.  I also have an off-kilter sense of humour so I’m always looking for the unusual.”

Explore the World of Science in How Science Works from DK Canada

DK Canada

I love science, it was by far my favourite subjects in high school especially chemistry. I loved learning how things worked and all about the world around us. My kids have picked up interest in this area and we love doing experiments and learning the how/why behind how things happen. Books are a great way to enrich the real life experiences your child has with science and How Science Works from DK Canada has everything you want to know and more.

Explore the World of Science in How Science Works from DK Canada

How Science Works uses clear, easy-to-understand graphics to answer common questions and explain difficult concepts-not only the core science topics that eluded us at school, but also the cutting-edge science reported in the news.

Have you ever wondered how airplanes stay in the air, how holograms are made, or how ants lift things many times their size? You’ll find answers to these enigmas as well as learn about more complex developments, including the discovery of the Higgs boson, gravitational waves, and the mysteries of dark matter. Topic spreads include Q&A features, short-story sections, and simple graphics to answer all your questions about scientific principles, from familiar conundrums to mysteries that evade even the brightest minds.

You can purchase a copy of this book on DK Canada.

My Thoughts

This hard covered book contains roughly 250 pages of everything science related you can think of. The book covers matter, energy, life, space and earth – giving you a little bit of everything in the science field. Each section is colour coded at the top right allowing your child to pick what section they want to discover more about.

Each section is further broken down into a variety of popular topics, for example matter covers elements, atoms and reactions, while life covers viruses, cells, carbon cycle and so on. Each topic has an easy to read introduction before diving into more depth about the subject. The information is given in an easy to follow and understand format, which is great for older children and pre-teens (I even learned some new information!). It was also easy to read aloud to our youngest and started some great conversations at home.

Each topic also contains extremely helpful visual guides and illustrations. I am a visual learner so for me, this makes the learning process much easier for me. Many children also love visuals so this was a great addition to this book. The illustrations were bright and add excitement to each page, while driving home key points on each subject.

How Science Works is a beautifully designed book jam-packed with information on a wide variety of topics that will impress all young budding scientists and a must have addition to your learning library.

It was our special bonding time where we could sneak in cuddles and just be ourselves.

Packed with babies’ favorite animals, from puppies and kittens, to zebras and elephants, but packaged with style, this book is just right for design-conscious adults and their information-hungry babies.

Our Thoughts

These beautiful, brightly coloured books will be a favourite in your young child’s first library. They are hard covered but soft for your children. I loved how the images on the cover and inside the books were textured as well which is so important for toddlers. They love to touch and it gives a realistic look to each image.

The language is simple by design and allows you as a parent teaching moments, for example “kitten” – what noise does the kitten make, how does the kitten feel and so on. Both of the books give you the opportunity for these teaching moments allowing you to apply it to real life.

These beautifully designed books will become a favourite in your home and would make a great baby shower gift.
