Bringing Maggie Home Book Review

About Bringing Maggie Home

Hazel DeFord is a woman haunted by her past. While berry picking in a blackberry thicket in 1943, ten-year old Hazel momentarily turns her back on her three-year old sister Maggie and the young girl disappears.

Almost seventy years later, the mystery remains unsolved and the secret guilt Hazel carries has alienated her from her daughter Diane, who can’t understand her mother’s overprotectiveness and near paranoia. While Diane resents her mother’s inexplicable eccentricities, her daughter Meghan—a cold case agent—cherishes her grandmother’s lavish attention and affection.

When a traffic accident forces Meghan to take a six-week leave-of-absence to recover, all three generations of DeFord women find themselves unexpectedly under the same roof. Meghan knows she will have to act as a mediator between the two headstrong and contentious women. But when they uncover Hazel’s painful secret, will Meghan also be able to use her investigative prowess to solve the family mystery and help both women recover all that’s been lost?

My Thoughts

Bringing Maggie Home is a brilliant novel following the lives of three generations of women in the same family. Each of them has been impacted by Hazel’s past and the disappearance of her younger sister Maggie although her daughter Diane and granddaughter Meghan do not know about Hazel’s past and the loss of her sister.

When Hazel’s sister disappears, her world is shattered. It tears apart her parents and she carries a guilt that no child should bear. As Diane and Meghan later learn, the impact on the remaining years of her childhood and teen can be greatly seen in pictures and Hazel’s refusal to talk about what happened. Maggie’s disappearance causes Hazel to later on in life hold on too close to Diane, to the point where Diane felt smothered and anger towards her Mother.

When Meghan decides to investigate more into Maggie’s disappearance, the family dynamics begin to change. Hazel becomes more open and Diane becomes more understanding. It is amazing the amount of damage that one secret can cause! Hazel’s refusal to talk about her sister caused a great rift between her daughter and herself. If she had chosen to speak to Diane about it in the beginning, Diane may have appreciated more why her Mother was so protective and overbearing.

Bringing Maggie Home is a well written novel showcasing forgiveness, compassion, hope and love. It shows us that we need to be honest with those we love and to learn to show compassion and forgive each other for our  mistakes. I laughed and cried along with Hazel, Diane and Meghan always keeping my fingers and toes crossed for the happy ending that this family deserves. This is a definite must read novel!

Sharks and Other Deadly Ocean Creatures #DKWildLife

Our Thoughts

This is the perfect introduction for young children into the world of ocean creatures! It is hard covered and letter sized. It was one of the first books we opened up to start to read when we received them!

The pictures are large – some are even full size – which really grabs your child’s attention and gets them excited to learn. This is so important for young readers as you really want to get them excited about learning and not lost in the words.

The book is divided up into coloured sections based on primeval predators, mud-rooting monsters, devils of the dark and killers between the tides. Fantastic groupings right? Our boys LOVED that! You learned everything from the famous Megalodon to the Vampire Squid to the Blind Shark. Each shark has about a paragraph dedicated to it as well as a quick data file that contains information such as predator power, size, diet and distribution.

This was a great book full of interesting information and facts that is well suited for all ages.

Our Thoughts

We have HUGE shark fans in our home. We never miss Shark Week every year and we love watching any and all documentaries on sharks on television. Sharkpedia is definitely a must have library book addition for all shark lovers in your home.

Sharkpedia reads almost like a cross between an encyclopedia and a scrapbook. The beginning of the book gives an introduction to sharks (history, fears, etc) and then dives right into the background on a large group of sharks. The book wraps up with research on shark attacks and media news.

While a hard covered book on the outside, each page is soft. The book itself is letter paper sized with excellent sized photographs. This book is definitely suited to the older child or a younger child with great reading skills. I loved how the way the book was illustrated and designed. The darker colours (especially the cover) really suits the story line of this book. Our favourite areas of this book was definitely the individual shark pages (I loved the leopard shark) as we learned so much about different types of sharks, a lot of them we had never known about before.

This is a great book for both the shark and animal fans in your home!

Our Thoughts

Bugs, Bees and other Buzzy Creatures is the perfect introduction to the world of insects for preschoolers and young school age children.

This hard covered book is bright and bold, perfect for drawing in young readers and keeping their attention. The words are easy to read out loud and well suited for this age group with regards to comprehension. I loved how each section of the book had information about a certain insect and the following pages had a craft to follow-up and reinforce the learning that they just did.

The crafts were fun and easy to do, you will have most of the supplies around your home already. My two favourite crafts are a toss-up between the honey cookies and dragon-fly clips!

Easy Pumpkin Carving: Spooktacular Patterns, Tips and Ideas Book Review

With Halloween right around the corner (yay – my favourite holiday of the year!), many of us are already starting to think about picking up our pumpkins and how to create the perfect pumpkin carving design.

Easy Pumpkin Carving: Spooktacular Patterns, Tips and Ideas Book Review

About Easy Pumpkin Carving

Carve the perfect Halloween masterpiece! Whether you’re a first-time pumpkin carver or an experienced pro, create the best jack-o-lantern on the block with this handy guide.

Impress those trick-or-treaters with clever, easy-to-carve pumpkin ideas. Easy Pumpkin Carving offers tips and tricks for fang-tastic pumpkin carving with techniques that go way beyond traditional methods. Create luminary pumpkins and etched pumpkins, combine multiple pumpkins in creative ways, or embellish pumpkins without even touching a knife.

With inspirational color photos and a dozen ready-to-use pumpkin carving patterns, you’re sure to have a spooktacular Halloween with this book.

My Thoughts

I love Halloween – it has always been my favourite holiday. Our family usually goes all out with decorations including lights and sounds (courtesy of my husband!). The only area that we need some serious improvement on is our pumpkin carving skills.

We always have great expectations and try so hard with the pumpkins but they never turn out quite as imagined on paper. We usually carve out too much in one area, it is lopsided or the carvings just don’t even look remotely close to the plan.

This book starts out that basics from the types of pumpkins and how to choose the best kind for carving to the tools you will need (a regular cutting knife or box knife isn’t going to cut it) as well as some extra tools and techniques that will help you out during the carving process.

The book contains five different techniques from traditional carving to luminaries to etching and embellishing. Each technique has the special tools and tips that you will need to pull off the carving style. Each technique also comes with several pages of photographs of the style to give you plenty of ideas when you plan out your own pumpkin. Colleen includes some amazing photographs of pumpkin styles to help decorate your home – I have so many favourites that I won’t be able to choose just one this year! I am going to go with a combination of embellished  black pumpkins and a traditional with etched designs in it.

Colleen also includes a great range of carving patterns at the end of the book that you can use when carving out your own pumpkin. She makes it even easier as she includes what type and size of pumpkin to use each design on (as I learned not all designs are good on all pumpkins!) as well as an interesting fact.

Book Excerpt

Carving Tips

  • Actually carving your pumpkin is simple enough. Here are some tips to make carving easy and effective:
  • Saw steadily with a continuous up and down motion, and don’t press too hard or try to go too fast.
  • When you’re finished cutting out a standalone piece (like an eye), pop it out of the pumpkin wall with your finger, not your carving tool.
  • To cut clean, sharp corners, remove and reinsert the carving tool.
  • Carve starting from the inside of the design and working your way outward.
  • Resist the urge to put your free hand inside the pumpkin while carving. Only do so if you can clearly see where all of your hand is.
  • If you accidentally break off a part of your carving as you work, such as a protruding tooth, stick it back on with a toothpick!

Preserve Your Pumpkin!

Keep your carved pumpkin cool and out of the direct sunlight (you can even put it in the fridge). You can also coat the interior and all cut edges with petroleum jelly to help lock in the pumpkin’s natural moisture, or purchase special preservative sprays for pumpkins. ”  – Pumpkin Carving
